They used 8 string guitars, custom made for them by ibanez. It definitely brought a new flavor to the music. The most mechanical Meshuggah album yet. The production is a little more raw compared to Chaosphere. The drums are a bit sharper/thrashier. I would go as far as to say this is the heaviest music they've written since the None ep in 1994. They stay true to the sound they've been perfecting over the last 8 years. Jens' vocals sound better than they ever have. A solid mix, everything is evenly audible. They brought some atmosphere and clean guitars (spread sparsely throughout the 50 minutes of music) back into their sound. The soloing is the only aspect that is lacking. More than half of the solos are highly derivative of solos from older songs. You can hear phrases identical to those heard in the guitar solos in New Millenium Cyanide Christ, The Mouth Licking What You've Bled and 2 other songs from Fredriks solo album (Sol Niger Within).

:Jul 26,2002 4:07pm - post by AllanHoldsworth
I take back what I said about the solos being weak. Yes, 3 or 4 of them sound similar to older stuff he's done, but all of them are killer none the less.

The first song is absolutely disgusting. The thrash/heaviness factor blows through the roof. This is some of the most violent music I've ever come across. If these guys come back to the palladium there will be about 50+ dented craniums.

finally got this motherfucker. (thanks kevin) It's not as chaotic as 'chaosphere' but is good and heavy in its own way.

:Aug 9,2002 11:56am - post by anonymous
The writing, just as mechanical and crushing. The production is a tad warmer and more raw, giving it a more human feel that chaosphere. admittedly, i was hoping for the new album to be chaosphere on crack, which it is not.
The pace of the entire cd seems more uniform than any others, just about everything chugs along at a medium speed. The solos for whatever reason, I like more than any other album. Fredrick knows how to create tension.. and that he does.
Overall, I'm not as impressed as when i first heard.. well, chaosphere...
This is the kind of cd you HAVE to give time to appreciate, and I'm sure it will get better with more listens.

:Aug 14,2002 5:43pm - post by Meshuggah!!!!
THis album is insane. It is like no other Meshuggah album let alone even near any sound produced by a band ever. Although i do feel Chaosphere is their best work and i do know all of their work very well all the way back to contridictions collapse. THis album has the heaviest feel by far. Whereas DEI was very intellectual and planned and C/C was very much like a more brutal Metallica mixed with jazz rhythms and first album Korn although it dates to 1991 and CHaosphere was all out Chaos and brutality, Nothing brings more of a bludgeoned feel to mind. It starts off with Stengah which mauls your senses and moves onto Rational Gaze which has the most trippy sound in metal history. The beat is just crazy. Perpetual Black second is the closest they come to Chaosphere with an insane solo and a much faster beat than the rest of the tracks. Closed Eye Visuals is very slow and for any fan of the more progressive side of music this track will appeal. IT is 7:25 long. After that comes another brutal track of course nothing compared to New MIllenium but still. Organic Shadows is the slowest track they ahve ever written. Making Sublevels feel like COncatenation. It has very low sounding vocals. LIke a more human sounding death growl. After this slow as shit track comes the most melodic song on the album which in my oppinion is pure brilliance. Straws Pulled at Random is the name of it and it is just amazing. It has a mid level tempo and really picks up where Glints Collide leaves off. Spasm is done entirely in JEns THe Exquisite mach... voice. The music is completely brutal. Nebulous introduces itself with another alien sounding focus and mauls you into pieces. Obsidian is instrumental and doesnt have much going on with it except it leaves you wanting more. THis album in my view is a very experimental album and will no doubt make many MEshuggah fans turn their backs on the band. THey all need to give this record a good 5 listens and then re think their standing. I give this record an A. NO CHAOSPHERE but NO DISSAPOINTMENT!

:Aug 24,2002 7:41pm - post by anonymous
Meshuggah rulz all!!! These guys are as original as they come. If you think they suck, you suck. They are so beyond anything Slipknot has to offer. What more can I say??? To see them live is to watch 5 gods of metal play before you........

:Aug 26,2002 10:07am - post by anonymous
you folks are right. nothing just does not shred as does chaos, dei, etc... but meshuggah does not need to shred in order to be brilliant. which is what nothing shows us. it still confuses me a bit and will take time for my full appreciation. so far my fav tracks are 7-8. i don't know song titles. the solo in 7 and the preceding/proceding music is almost beautiful sounding. only mushuggah can add beauty in the midst of chaos. i love 8 simply because it slightly resembles exquisite machinery of torture.

:Aug 27,2002 2:04am - post by anonymous
the first time i heard straws
pulled at random i was just like
what the fuck?
i didnt really know what it was,
but it growed on me and its a
song in my head i hold as
classic.
this is a turning point for metal
is is different to all previous
album material and should
give an alternative to people
to need something new to hear
and be inspired by.

P.S isnt it funny how they now have
two albums called None and Nothing.
maybe they cant think of proper names?
10 outa 10

After the rather weak Chaosphere (expected more after sol niger.. released in march 97), i'm now satisfied. Nothing is what i've been waiting for over five years. PS: Credits and songinfo on the cd in Macromedia flash player format.

:Aug 30,2002 12:04am - post by AllanHoldsworth
Hey Rev... do you know why there are so many reviews of this cd??? BECAUSE YOU GOT LINKED OFF MESHUGGAH.NET! Go check it out, it's on the NEWS page. Ha, that's fat. If the faggot named annonymous (too pussy to sign his name) wants to meet up sometime I can arrange to have you ass fucked with a steak knife. Get AIDS.

Definately more raw and unpolished compared to chaosphere, but still the same meshuggah and still awesome. Very sludgy sounding. Same signature jazz rythyms incorporated into the music. i give it 10 out of 10. Meshuggah fucking rulez!

:Sep 3,2002 7:27pm - post by imnotme
Allan, your a fucking idiot. If this album could be recorded any better youd be in the studio everytime you listen to it.
If it could be any heavier, it would bust your eardrums to listen. Fuck off all ye nay-sayers.

for any of you interested in a/v syncs, NOTHING goes with the 1983 time-lapse video KOYAANISQATSI. pause the cd, ff the video to 18m, after a field of flowers changes into a rockface, unpause NOTHING. notice how they correlate throughout the entire album. trip away.

:Sep 4,2002 4:28pm - post by anonymous
I just loved the record !!!! itīs pretty innovative and thanx for showing how to play in low-g and making cool music. the drums sound killer ( specially the snare)itīs darker and, in a way, groovier than previous material. theyīve left some more space so you can try to get whatīs going on( and eventually...fail!!! thatīs the cool thing i find about meshuggah!)great job. Nile,Meshuggah and Hate Eternalīs new albums in less than a month!!! I could hardly survive though this year!!!!!

:Sep 5,2002 12:33am - post by anonymous
definitely their "groove" record, i.e. their most cohesive and mature to date. everything flows nicely at mid-tempo and the mellow changes are seamless and left me wanting more. more depth and dimension than chaosphere which for me was like a 47-minute heart attack. THIS ALBUM IS JUST SO GLORIOUS AND GROOVY I CAN'T EVEN BEGIN TO DROOL BECAUSE THEN I'D NEVER STOP. p.s. sometimes i think these "Anonymous" losers who dis all these godlike bands are just the webhosts lookin to stir up some shit. i mean, how could anybody be so flippin' ignorant???

:Sep 5,2002 6:54pm - post by Meshuggavishnu
The immediate first impression any Meshuggah fan will get after a listen to "Nothing" is something along the lines of "This is too slow, too groovy, and not chaotic enough for Meshuggah!!" However after several listens and a patient ear, one will become to discover some of the truly twisted, dark, and maddeningly progressive elements of this latest offering by the "masters of technical brutality". The tempos on this album are definitely tuned down a notch, much like the 8-string guitars used to assault the listener with each and every cut off of "Nothing", but a true fan I think will see this as--pardon the pun--nothing short of brilliance. This album is as Meshuggah as Meshuggah can get, as stated by their own Marten Hagstrom. If you don't believe me, check out the murderous opener "Strengah" (how fucking low can you go? only Meshuggah knows!), the more-traditional Meshuggah pummeler "Spasm" (gotta love those random snare hits flawlessly excecuted by Mr. Tomas Haake), and the disturbingly tense "Closed Eye Visuals" (with special attention paid to the mid-song clean tone breakdown). That song succeeds in creating a desolate soundscape of eerie subconscious hysteria and maniacal euphoria. If you're still awake and reading this, the bottom line is this: "Nothing" is certainly more than its title suggests, and is worth anyone's patient, subjective listening. Keep it heavy!! Peace.

:Sep 10,2002 7:47pm - post by ritualfeast at hotmail.com
For some reason I was never very impressed with Meshuggah-- something about their tone put me off-- it didn't seem very original and never changed much from song to song. They've changed all that on this album, though. Absolutely brilliant. A lot of strange and unexpected tones. Reminds me a little of Gorguts' "Obscura," although not quite so bizarre.

:Sep 12,2002 3:03am - post by anonymous
nice album, actually their 8-string guitars are not ibanez. they're called newborn, made by a guy from Karlstad, Sweden.

:Oct 9,2002 10:04am - post by anonymous
Fuck the doubters, this is better than any fucking US metal album this year. "All they need is a Dj"-what kind of a scumfuck are you? Superlative stuff

The new Meshuggah album is just great asusual, they're the best band in the world and if you think otherwise you're an idiot...! If you compare them with Slipknot you gotta be fucking stupid!

:Nov 1,2002 7:56pm - post by ihatemanchester at cock.com#
man this record is fucking terrible every song sounds the same and you cant even make out the riffs these guys truly suck its like fear factory or slipknot orsome shit when are these fags gonna give up the ghost and sign to roadrunner

:Nov 17,2002 8:41pm - post by Spalding138 at yahoo.com#
this fucking sucks. i listened to this album well before it came out and it was a fucking waste of a download. so what if they used 8 string gu itars... this album still sucks. its just the same shit over and over and over. i dont care how off timing their music is, it is still a heap of crap. they are not original either. look at hardcore... its all open string crap played in different rythyms as well. and their vocalist is aggravating. anyo ne that can sit there and listen to this album all the way through and actually call it "amazing" or "awesome" has no musical taste what-so-ever. go and listen to the radio and watch MTv you fucking lame ass faggots.

:Nov 25,2002 12:06pm - post by Spoon_Fed
If Gorguts made jingles for Fisher Price commercials it would sound like this. PULL! *BLAM*

:Nov 26,2002 10:37pm - post by anonymous
For one thing, anyone who uses an 8 string guitar is fucking gay. And secondly this album does indeed suck. "They don't play on the downbeats! they must HAVE to be amazing!" fucking losers.
Stop thinking its good because it's meshuggah. Chaosphere is their best album, and it's not even that good. Honestly, could they use the same note any more times? I don't think so. It's just a bunch of repetetive bullshit. So what if it's tight and together. It still sucks my chode red and raw.

:Nov 30,2002 6:55pm - post by anonymous
wow, what a collection of non-metal-loving faggots. I suppose all of you liked the new Nile album. Now that is an atrocity as far as repetiveness goes, at least Mesh isn't dependent on a goofy Egyptian gimmick.

:Dec 2,2002 1:58am - post by anonymous
this sucks the shit right from a dogs asshole. fuck this, if you want good swedish metal listen to nasum. this stuffs so stupid that the bald guy on mtv will be sporting a meshugga shirt next week. what a bunch of in flames loving queers.

:Dec 3,2002 11:16pm - post by nebulous
What the fuck is going on here. THis album is the 4th time the mighty Meshuggah have created a new style! Rational Gaze is like an acid trip. Perpetual black second just fucking rips you a new asshole and Glints Collide just makes you want to pound peoples faces. The music is so precise you know only Meshuggah couldve made it. Organic Shadows is so slow it almost sounds like noise. That is a good thing. The solo in it is amazing even if it isnt Mouth licking what youve bled style. Straws PUlled at Random is my favorite track. It has the craziest intro and then blasts into the weirdest song anyone has heard since Chaosphere came out. It ends with a creepy melodicness to the music that makes you feel enlightened. Spasm is all of the Jens talking evil voice found on ecsquisite machinery. It is brutal as fuck. Nebulous has the heaviest beat i have ever heard. Not the most brutal but the heaviest. YOu feel trapped in a tar pit. Obsidian ends the album with strange cosmic noises which are very appropriate for the album. BOTTOM LINE: original, clever, precise, brutal. Buy THIS NOW!!!!!

:Dec 6,2002 11:27am - post by babysbreath
after many plays, its starting to grow on me as predicted. I can safely say its not thier best cd at this point, chaosphere takes that one. Nothing has that quality that lets you listen to the whole thing cover to cover, without jonesing for another cd. I only hope Meshuggah goes waay out there on the next album, or returns to the Chaosphere-esque delivery.

:Dec 7,2002 6:37am - post by anonymous
the 8 strings are not made by Ibanez. it's made by a swedish "luthier" (guy who creates guitar and bass, i dont know the english word) only for them...

:Dec 23,2002 10:40pm - post by anonymous
Meshuggah are one of the most original flavoursome metal bands of today and cannot be compared to the likes of nu-metal bands like Slipknot who have no knowledge of what the hell they are playing and can't ever step outside of simple time signatures because they don't have the ability to do so. Slipknot need 7 people to get the same sound it would take 2 beginner guitarists who have had one guitar lesson in their whole life. People who like Slipknot obviously haven't any real knowledge of music and i guess shouldn't really know better. Meshuggah however, use compound time signatures to offset the eighth note rhythms. This creates the chaotic ENERGY we have come to expect from such a great band. Also, Fredrick Thordendal is unmatched in his ability to improvise on a symmetrical diminished scale, half/whole tones etc... His tapping techniques are unique and his own style. The only other band that comes close to Meshuggah in technical prowess is The Dillinger Escape Plan. So as God(dei) would say DESTROY ERASE IMPROVE gay pop bands like slipknot!

First of all, "Swany", I like Slipknot AND Meshuggah. Does that mean that I have no real knowledge of music? I'd like to think that someone whose words imply open mindedness wouldn't be narrow minded enough to say something ignorant like that. Second of all with all due respect to your musical experience you make yourself sound like an emotionless click track of a musical snob with all your technical jargon that hardly anyone reading this will understand. Anyway, as for the new Meshuggah, it's definitely cool in it's own way, although I thought Destroy Erase Improve and Chaosphere illustrated a better balance of technical prowess vs. raw emotion. Definitely an acquired taste. The vocals weren't anywhere near as good as they were on Chaosphere and DEI. They sound really forced and haggard. Good CD but DEI is still the best by far. Three Words: Future Breed Machine. Nuff said...

:Jan 4,2003 11:45am - post by anonymous
meshuggah ballern!!!!!!!! the new album is absolutely great!!! to those disappointed: listen again, man and try to check what they are doing, incredible!!!

:Jan 4,2003 5:22pm - post by anonymous
Allan the guitars were made by nevborn by a guy who lives out in the woods in a little house. NOT by Ibenhad. And they play Nevborn 7 strings live cause there is a problem with keeping the eight strings in tune. The 8 strings are still being perfected. So get your facts right before you try to think your cool.

:Jan 5,2003 1:11am - post by anonymous
Meshuggah are one of the only few bands that are distinctive and original in the whole Metal music stage."Nothing" is just a proof of their constant evolvement into more raw, complex and unique songs structure that can be considered truly art,and as with art not everyone understands it,but those who do they know the value of it.Someone compared Slipknot to Meshuggah here and thats the lamest things I've come through lately.C'mon,Slipknot???dont make me laugh.

:Jan 6,2003 7:08pm - post by anonymous
Why all this talk of slipknot in a meshuggah review? Anyone with half a brain can play that crap, why even compare the two? This isnt their best album...but it is cool. Bit softer then dei or chaos, but I havnt stopped listenin to it...and DEP rock...their new ep with mike patton has to be the best thing released for ages

:Jan 7,2003 1:36am - post by AllanHoldsworth
I wrote that review in July. Before the cd was even out, and before anyone (including you) knew they played Nevborn 7 strings on Nothing. I'm not trying to think I'm cool because I know I'm cool. Much cooler than you. Stop talking shit to someone who knows more about Meshuggah than you ever will.

:Jan 12,2003 10:41am - post by TheRealLordWorm
This cd is crap. Every song sounds virtually the same. What happened to the melodic solos in Destory Erase Improve? Or the unquestionable brutality of Chaosphere? Meshuggah is an amazing band but if they release another shit album like this again then I will lose all repect for them.

:Jan 13,2003 11:43pm - post by anonymous
I've only listened to it twice. I can say that I like the way it sounds but nothing really stands out. All of the songs sound the same, which is good or bad depending.....I could listen to this while lifting weights in the prison weight room...initially boring but maybe too much to grasp ...I'll give it a few more tries.

:Jan 23,2003 12:55pm - post by anonymous
Meshuggah are different from just about every other band, except Tool, in that they use every other timing possible except 4 timing, which is what conventional, boring music is based on. So the question is; are you clever enough to understand this music or are you looking for something more within your mental capabilities? The new album is harder to "get" but thats part of the fun isn't it! Become a Disciple of the New Millenium Cyanide Christ and understand the Chaos! -thrae

:Jan 23,2003 9:13pm - post by Kami
Meshuggah is the most orginal band i ever heard!. THEY FUKING ROCK! I like the Nothing cd but its not as good as Contradictions collapse & None. you need to get use to this cd. NOTHING: B-

:Feb 12,2003 12:24pm - post by anonymous
they give me a head ache everyone should listen to marduk no questions asked

:Feb 13,2003 10:11am - post by thrae at hotmail.com#

IF YOU'RE INTO POLYPHONIC TIMING THIS ALBUM IS JUST WHAT YOU'VE BEEN LOOKING FOR !!! THE NEW ALBUM IS LESS AGGRESSIVE THAN THE FIRST AND A BIT SLOWER AND ALSO ABIT LESS PUNCHY, BUT NOT BY ANY MEANS LESS COMPLICATED THAN THERE OTHER ALBUMS. IN FACT, THIS IS BY FAR THEIR MOST PROFFESIONAL ALBUM TO DATE, A WORKING MANUAL FOR OTHER MUSICIANS.

:Feb 16,2003 1:11pm - post by anonymous
this cd is alright but if you like better guitar listen to darkane

:Mar 7,2003 8:32pm - post by anonymous
Goddam MEshuggah sucks ass. The solo's suck even more, i'm very dissapointed. No wonder it only cost me 5 bux. I could of bought myself some hot cheetos and a coke. \m/

As always, MESHUGGAH rules! Period! And for those of you weak humans who don't understand this simple fact: Grow up! Get laid (for the first time)! Or seek a doctor for some help! The new Meshuggah album totally rocks and proves (for the first time in music history) that this kind of music can evolve. // Mats - Sweden

Btw, forgot to add...

If any of you pale uncivlized faggots have to compare such great act as Meshuggah to Slipknot I suggest you put your strap-on on and go and fuck your mom, or grandma, or your pet (goat?) or your dad! And that's straight from my heart to yours...you stupid sodomized pieces of human waste :-) // Mats - Sweden

man some of you people say meshuggah suck, well you can go somewhere else with your bull shit because the people that do like them dont need your 2 cents. So keep your opinions to yourself, how would you like it if i said your favorite band sucked??

Hi,i've known the band for about 3or4 years now and i just love listening to it as a drummer and as a music lover.Although Chaosphere is my favourite album,i very much enjoy Nothing, especially the tune where Thomas sings. I am very happy to know that MR.ALLAN HOLDSWORTH is a fan of the band(very understandable considering his own style of playing),thanx for all the great music Allan and Meshuggah!! heavier, filthy sound, from guitars. vox sound's like he's been chewing on gravel - awesome. slow, steam-roller tempos give that dragging, grinding, exhuated feel. Groovier, but not Millenium Cyanide groovey. I thnik that Straws is the stand out track here, strong inrto, memorable riff and the unusual wind down at the very end works amazingly well. Amazing how they have a new sound of their own AGAIN. Has to be said that I found it the most samey of all of the albums although I find their newer raw sound refreshing, less strict sounding (strings bend out of tune all over). You guys sure do bitch a lot on this post! blah blah slipknot blah blah dj blah blah blah better technique than other bands blah blah. Can't views be stated without getting pissy?

:Apr 4,2003 2:21pm - post by anonymous
I have been a fan of Meshuggah since None, and this album sunk far below my expectations for the follow-up to Chaosphere.....it doesn't even really seem like the same band that made Destroy Erase Improve. Honestly, the music is precise, well-played, well-mixed, and heavy, but I got the feeling, from listening to it over and over, that they are beginning to "sell out". I know nobody wants to hear that about Meshuggah - they're fuckin' amazing - but I think they should stayed far from Jack Osbourne and Ozzfest. "We're from Sweden, you fuckin' fat jewfro bitch..............go fuck yourself."

:Apr 4,2003 7:43pm - post by anonymous
I wouldn't say they're "selling out"........I mean hell, they've been playing for 16 years now and they've stuck to their guns by playing heavy odd time signature metal........up until the release of "Nothing", all the guys in the band had a side job besides being in the band just so they'd make enough money to live!!! So I think it's about time these guys started making music that's more mainstream........I don't mean they should make any drastic changes, but I think they're headed in the right direction........"Nothing" is a heavy masterpeice!

:Apr 4,2003 10:42pm - post by anonymous
Tomas Haake's double bass chops in Glints Collige and Straws Pulled At Random are far beyond the human boundries. What a masterpiece! I hope the next cd is a bit faster and even heavier!

i think this is an excellent album , although is not as easy to digest as their other albums. Anybody who says this album sucks clearly have a weak brain, meshuggah's music is too complicated for them, in that case they should just listen to lame bands like Crazy Town or something..

:Apr 7,2003 12:36am - post by anonymous
bloody hell. this album is earth shatering, just brutal. spasm is my pick read the liricks and you will know what I mean.
long live MESHUGGAH !!!!!!!!

I love "Nebulous"........it's really slow but it's so skull crushing and heavy.......it's like you're slowly being ripped apart by a giant machine. Meshuggah rule!

How can anyone say that this band or this cd sucks? These guys are special and are in a league of their own.........on top of the metal world!

:Apr 15,2003 3:22pm - post by anonymous
I own every single Meshuggah cd and this one is my favorite........it's so evil sounding and the guitar tone is so thick with the 8-string guitars!

:Apr 17,2003 12:09pm - post by jacob at planetkillswitch.com#
People who don't like "nothing" are fucking ignorant. If you respected the musical integrity and sheer skill of anything they have ever done before, then you would see the genius that went into this album's creation. NOthing exists that is like anything meshuggah has ever done. Metal doesn't have to be fast to be brutal. Stop fucking crying that it doesn't sound like chaosphere or dei. IT'S NOT. It's a new reinvention for the band. They aren't At The Gates (Who puts out album after album full of the same bullshit melodic thrash) or In Flames (more of the same) or any other swedish metal. Fuck you all, if you like to think then you like this album. If you want to be pummeled with more Slayer rip off Swedish garbage, go buy an In Flames cd.

MESHUGGAH JUST GOT THEIR COSTUM NEVBRON 8-STRING GUITARS IN TODAY!!! THEY WILL BE SHOWCASING THEM ON THEIR NEXT (US) TOUR IN MAY.....................ALL HAIL MESHUGGAH>>>

:Apr 20,2003 8:49pm - post by anonymous
People will always talk shit if something is not what they thought it would be, but this cd is amazing to say the least......Organic Shadows, Nebulous, and Closed Eye Visuals are slower songs than their previous works but they are so well put together.......they morph into such mind-twisting frequencies........before you talk shit about this cd I suggest you listen to this cd many times and really pay attention to the way the put their songs together and the power those 8-string guitars put out-_-_-_-_-_

:May 7,2003 5:08pm - post by anonymous
8-string guitars? that's the stupidest thing i've ever heard of. 7-strings are bad enough. and ibanez blows. I've lost respect.

:May 8,2003 12:39pm - post by anonymous
THAT'S KINDA A DUMB WAY OF LOOKING AT IT MAN........MESHUGGAH HAVE ALWAYS BEEN ONE OF THE MOST INOVATIVE PROGRESSIVE METAL BANDS SINCE THEY STARTED.......EVERY ONE OF THEIR ALBUMS HAS A DIFFERENT STYLE AND SOUND OF IT'S OWN........THEY JUST LIKE TO TRY NEW THINGS AND NEVER STAY THE SAME SO IT'S FRESH.........I THINK THE 8-STRINGS SOUND KILLER LIVE AND ON THE NOTHING CD.........SO I DON'T KNOW WHAT YOUR PROBLEM IS...........MESHUGGAH FUCKING RULZ

:May 10,2003 3:21pm - post by FinalBloodbath
This album is thier most progressive this band keeps getting better oh yeah you gotta let it grow on you man.

:May 11,2003 4:02pm - post by anonymous
These guys are in a league of their own....no gimics, just normal guys that are pissed off and fucked up in the head and make sick twisted polyrythmic metal.....if you're dumb and/or ignorant don't even bother listening to these guys.....let me put it this way, they made Slayer look boring when I saw them play on the Slayer tour!!!!!!!

Well, guys.. I've got one thing to say: I bought this album when it got out.. I've listened to it almost every day ever since.. I was nothing but confused and impressed, I couldn't enjoy.. Then I went off to see and meet them in Umeå, Sweden.. The most spectacular show, I've seen, such brilliance and perfectionism.. When I got home, Nothing was melt down, now I can enjoy it with all my heart. It takes time, but it is worth it. My favourite track is "Closed eye visuals" ..just a brilliant track. Listen to them live, and you will understand. They are no slipknot, way more grown up, musically that is (watch "the movie" and you can't call them grownups). ;) ..well, well.. you willl hear the perfectionism.. Hail Meshuggah, and skål!

CLOSED EYE VISUALS IS SUCH AN AWESOME SONG. THORDENDALS' SOLOS ARE ALWAYS TOP NOTCH AND FIT INTO THE SONG LIKE NERVES AND VAINS OF THE HUMAN BODY. STENGAH IS A KILLER OPENER AND DISPLAYS HAAKES' DRUM ABILITIES AS IF WE DIDN'T ALREADY KNOW HE'S A 4-WAY INDEPENDENCE DRUMMING GOD. CAN'T WAIT TO SEE THEIR VIDEO FOR "RATIONAL GAZE" WHICH I HEARD IS DUE OUT SOON. MESHUGGAH RULES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nothing is such a hateful energy filled beast of a record. my favorite track is no.#2.to some it up i visualize a long knife stabbing my face with every gutair riff, as soon as the vocals hit its like satan himself spitting acid into the fresh wounds.yes this albumn is demonic but in a scary way,its not your run of the mill meshuggah anymore... its seriously sounds like satan him self has possed the music. its so mean so ready to destroy all that stands in the way,all the ignorant... in that insane repetitive robotic meshuggah tone that they've tweaked over 8 years. its simple the album is only for those who understand... it will grow on you as all meshuggah does... it posesses your mind and makes you evil as well you will hurt the innocent with this shit clawing at the walls of your skull...

:Jun 29,2003 9:33pm - post by hazardous4ya at hotmail.com#
I bought the CD a few days ago and not knowing that much of the band I jsut know of this band called Strapping Young Lads and they thought that The Haunted and Meshuggah would be one of the greatest line ups besides themselves. They also said it's more for the band than it is the fans, they kept reassuring themselvesi, in repetition, everything they say, everything has to deal with music. This Meshuggah CD kicks ass and it love the beat to it and everything especially blastin out my neghbors brains. I refer it to a friend, hell, I'd refer it to anyone! Muah, Babyblonde.

:Jul 23,2003 2:27pm - post by anonymous

:Jul 23,2003 9:12pm - post by anonymous
Flat out this band rules because they don't play the standard crap that everyone else plays.....there's 56,452 death metal bands out there but there's only 1 Meshuggah......c'mon man, get real Destroy Erase Improve and Chaosphere are two masterpieces......see them live and I bet your view point will change......but some people will never get it.

I did see them live, they sucked.

:Jul 24,2003 2:23pm - post by moran
Don't tell me to open my mind, I'm really open minded, I just don't like this band.

:Aug 19,2003 9:17pm - post by Devin
That's understandable. I didn't like them at first. But what intrigues me about them the most are their philosophical lyrics and hypnotic atmosphere, not their rhythmal complexity or their brutality. They were on Ozzfest. So fucking what! Cradle of Filth, Disturbed, Tool, Sepultura, and SLAYER were too! Meshuggah have yet to decline in quality, despite being lumped together with shitty nu-metal bands.

:Sep 4,2003 2:30am - post by Meshuggah101 at hotmail.com#
fuck man, not again. I didnt think they could, but they did. they fuckin did it again. Brilliance has been once again REINFUCKINGCARNATED into a deeper, serious, and almost mind melting tone. I dont think its right to say its no chaosphere cuz if jens wasnt singing you could almost say it was a different band. Theyve shifted into a new form for this album and its still the Meshuggah we all love, ADMIT IT BITCH. They still incorporate their distinct rhythmic patterns with the high and low background tones that scream MESHUGGAH. This band reinvented Metal. If Bach were alive he would be in the front of the crowd with me and Beethoven at the Palace Screaming "Disciples!!!!!! Come Join with Me!!!!!!!!"

i don't really understand how people can say that meshuggah is selling out and becoming more mainstream. the way i see things, "nothing" is the least accessible and most abstract of meshuggah's releases. even songs on DEI would sometimes wander into a "typical" metal scenario... always quickly changed, but there nevertheless. chaosphere i see as the beginning of meshuggah's true evolution of their signature sound and their descent into total insanity. this album's power is inexplicable. it's like a journey for your mind. if i were a mallcore fan, i probably wouldn't like this music either. mainly because it lacks a simple structure. but that's what makes it so wonderful to me. even the use of similar chord progressions throughout the album is reflective of it's importance as a whole. this album is not for the intellectually weak. you cannot truly enjoy this masterpiece if you cannot truly understand what is happening inside of this musical jigsaw puzzle, nor care to do so. meshuggah's evolution is blatant, majestic, and spectacular. it is still hard as hell, and it is more complex than ever before. by FAR, this is meshuggah's most progressive, least accessible and hands-down least mainstream album. remember, linkin park is mainstream... don't make me beat your ass. nothing about meshuggah screams "mallcore".

:Oct 9,2003 7:53pm - post by antancai
well, for the people that sign anonymous to bad reviews, they obviously don't have backup or knowledge of what they're saying, because they leave "anon" as their info... I'd like to see those people at a Meshuggah show and watch their heads be able to flow with the rythm...they don't know the extremity of this music. Fredrik Thordendal's solo album is the best, by far, investment I've ever made on a CD. Meshuggah in itself is truely one of a kind, no where comparable to Slipknot or any "nu-metal" or radio music. When you have a little musical knowledge, you can see that...but comparing them to Slipknot shows you (they) know nothing. And by nothing, I don't mean the new CD. die.

i have three meshuggah albums, contradictions, chaosphere and nothing.
nothing has the unique sound that i think they were going for, spiraling and out of control the album is an imense concept of their 'true' sound. i personaly like track 4 which completely sends me to a different world. this is an album you either hate or love. i love it. i give this album 9.6 outa 10.
any1 who wants to email me about this is welcome.

To all of those who don't like Meshuggah... give them a chance, the music has to grow on you. They're definitely not a band you can get into right away, and at first, the songs may sound the same and be hard to keep up with. Just keep listening, and you will realize how powerful and amazing they are. To all the fans, keep listening to Meshuggah!

:Nov 14,2003 11:10pm - post by anonymous
THIS ALBUM IS REALLY SOLID FROM START TO FINISH. I DON'T KNOW WHY PEOPLE BASH IT SO MUCH. I GUESS BECAUSE THE SONGS HAVE SLOWER TEMPOS. BUT IT'S STILL HEAVY AND THICK AS HELL. TAKE THE TIME TO LISTEN TO THIS CD WITH AN OPEN MIND AND LET IT ABSORB INTO YOUR BRAIN. NEBULOUS IS SUCH A GREAT SONG. MESHUGGAH RULES!!!!!

:Nov 19,2003 9:01am - post by jacob at planetkillswitch.com#
With all of this slipknot being compared to meshuggah....to the dork who said that they're both great rock bands. NO. Slipknot might be a rock band. They're not great. They're not even good. But i suppose since they chugga chugga a lot, that they qualify as a rock band. Meshuggah on the other hand are a sheer musical entity. "Nothing" is like the best, most thought provoking LSD trip you ever had slowed down to almost painful tempos, so that you're forced to slowly take into account all the sewage of the world repeatedly. Matter of fact, i think that's the main theme of "perpetual black second." "Rational gaze" and "closed eye visuals" are almost word for word accounts of LSD trips. The history of music has shown us that mind expansion, often at the cost of cohesion and sanity often leads to the most inspired music. Meshuggah have broken boundaries and outdone themselves again. Since i own their entire catalog, that's quite a feat. Since the day this album came out, i think i've listened to it EVERY DAY.

:Nov 24,2003 12:38pm - post by anonymous
THIS BAND HAS JUST THE RIGHT BLEND OF TECHNICALITY, POWER, AGGRESSION, GROOVE. MESHUGGAH'S MUSIC IS AN ALL OUT WAR ON YOUR SENSES. THEY AREN'T FOR THE WEAK MINDED, NOR FOR PEOPLE WHO STRITCTLY LISTEN TO BLAST BEAT SPEED METAL. "NOTHING" IS YET ANOTHER AMAZING CD FROM THE ALMIGHTY MESHUGGAH. CAN'T WAIT FOR THEIR 20 MINUTE 'SONG' EP DUE OUT IN THE SPRING OF 2004!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is one of the most incredible albums ever written (in my opinion). The drumming is incredible, its a very raw sounding album with the production some of the finest I've ever heard. Straws Pulled At Random gets my vote for the song of the album purely because of its crushiong drums on the intro and one of the most beautiful guitar solos ever written at the end.

10/10. AMAZING. UNIQUE. INCREDIBLE

Want something that will challenge your mind and something that is heavy? Look no further than Meshuggah. "Nothing" is their most raw brutal cd. A bit slower and less chaotic but more grinding and dark. Pick this shit up and let it soak into your brain.......

:Dec 14,2003 1:51am - post by MESHUGGAH!
This album is so fuckin' great! They use polyrhythmics more insane than ever, and the 8-string guitars is something I would die to have. Jens's vocals are as kick ass as they're previous albums. I've heard alot of complaints about the Nothing album, saying it lacks speed. Remember, Meshuggah is a technical metal band, they play to impress and to have they're own unique sound. If they were making albums with nothing but fast songs, they would be in a more than usual cliche'. Meshuggah haters.....fuck off! Earlier a user named anonymous, said they suck and said SHITknot was better. The only good from Shitknot is their drummer, Joey Jordison. But Mesh's drummer kills Joey. One more thing, FUCK MTV!!!!!!!

The genius above us wrote 'Funny how most heavy metal musicians regard them as good' or whatever. I happen to know many musicians, from Glen Benton in Deicide, to Alexi in Children of Bodem, Mikael in Opeth, and Jason in Diecast. All are respectable and exceptional musicians, and they all have something in common. They all think meshuggah SUCK. If you're not a homophobe, you will be, this cd sucks so much ass, well, there actually is a guy that is gay in this whom is married to a man, the drummer. Yes, he's just pressuring the band about giving him bjs and hard assfucks, and they seem to be giving in and it seems like they take it very well.

:Feb 3,2004 4:03pm - post by anonymous
Quit thinking you know everthing about music people.. I agree with the person who said Its ignorant when people say all the songs sound the same.. The drummer is better then ANY drummer EVER period mother fucker.. atleast in metal

:Feb 3,2004 4:06pm - post by anonymous
I dont know how they could play a concert as good as on the CD.. has anyone ever seen them? Because they better have some fuckin million dollar equipment if they want it to sound like it does on nothing ( the best album EVER period ) It would seem hard to distinguish the notes live in concert. But one weakness is the bassist.. Where the fuck is he? cant hear a thing hes playing atleast on Nothing

:Feb 4,2004 10:11am - post by anonymous
I don't think they even had a bass guitar on "Nothing". Yes I saw them live when they last toured the US and played songs from "Nothing". Their live sound is very impressive. One of the heaviest/thickest most brutal bands I've ever seen. I can't wait for Meshuggah's 20 minute 'song' EP due out in the SPRING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! www.meshuggah.net

:Feb 5,2004 9:21pm - post by anonymous
do you people really have nothing better to do with your time than go to message boards and make fun of a band? So you don't like Meshuggah? So what? Don't post. It's one thing to post a bad review if you didn't like the album but for christ's sake all this is turning into is a place to make fun of each other. And for the record, I love Meshuggah and Slipknot and lots of other "radio friendly" bands AND lots of underground bands. So sue me.

Glints collide is pretty cool, but i was very disappointed when i heard the album. i had heard many great things about it, and i was let down.shame.the songs are very samey [aren't they allways? yes, but on other albums they were GOOD]

5/10

:Feb 6,2004 6:02pm - post by anonymous
I this this cd has one of the most heavy thick tones I've ever heard. It's very dark and harsh. It's played in a slower tempo compaired to Destroy Erase Improve and Chaosphere but just as heavy none the less. *Drummers, listen close and you can hear that Tomas Haake keeps time with his hi-hat 90% of the time he's playing those odd time signatures and chops. This cd doesn't get old to me for some reason. The last song (track 9) is awesome! Can't wait for their EP which I hope is out this month or next!

Pretty good cd man. Don't listen to all the people out there who don't like them. Maybe they will get smart and try them again with an open mind, ya never know. Other bands that kick ass like this would be Dillinger escape plan, and my all time favorite Soilent Green. Man, listing to those guys is like being jacked in the head with a sledge hammer

:Nov 23,2004 6:47am - post by anonymous
I've noticed that all the people that guy listed as "musicians that think meshuggah suck" are from bands I laugh at people for liking. But thats just because they are so trite and fruity, not because they are also lame 80's throwbacks that suck Testament's collective balls. Meshuggah's talent is undeniable. Stop cutting your bangs and trying to be aloof, Yngwie.

Meshuggah are artists. They are not here to carry a fucking banner for "true swedish metal" or prove anything to fans of other bands.

They owe you, fittingly, nothing.

:Nov 23,2004 3:04pm - post by swamplorddvm

:Nov 24,2004 2:06pm - post by anonymous
Anyone who thinks this album sucks...I have bad news for you. It flew right over your head. Sorry, you lose, thanks for playing and please come again when you are in a band that beats Meshuggah.

:Feb 26,2005 9:48pm - post by anonymous
Man, the flamings are flying thicker than molasses left outside in northern sweden... i feel like i'm going to be caught in the cross-fire or something...

anyway...

Just to clear up, almost all Meshuggah songs are actually in 4/4. This is clear if you listen to just the crash (or hi-hat) and the snare in some of the riffs, such as the intro to new millenium cyanide christ. A drummer playing this song would have to think in 4/4. The reason the timing sounds so wierd is that the polyrhythms are in strange time "signatures", with the nmcc intro being 23/16, which just means that the repetitions are 23 16th-notes in length. Another example of this is the intro to rational gaze. Listen carefully to just the cymbal and snare. Songs that are actually in time signatures such as 5/4 or 7/8 are actually easier to play, imo.

"None" is a good addition to the Meshuggah cannon, however it is generally pretty similar to Chaosphere, a more listenable and dynamic album. "I" was much different, and a unique and excellent effort.

Dear last anon poster...

almost nothing that meshugah does is in 4/4 time. just because the crash or hi-hat is in 4/4 dosen't mean the song is.. sure, there may be spots where the china, or crash or hi-hats are in 4/4 but the snare, is probably in 7/8 and the feet are in 7/4 these are called polyrhythms, the drummer from Tool uses these too. The closest to a regular time I've ever heard from Meshuggah is either 3/4 or 5/4

Next thing you know people will be saying that Dream Theater, Evergrey, Ivory Tower, and other prog bands play in 4/4 time, just because the hi-hat is in 4/4

take this for example:
Dave Matthews Band - Satellite
The guitar is in 4/4 and the drums are in 11/8 remember, just because the guitar is in 4/4 dosen't mean the song is.

that's just a thought, and I'm sure I'll be flamed for mentioning DMB on RTTP, but whatever, Carter Beauford is one of the best NON-METAL drummers alive.

--------FIN--------

WOW. What a great follow up to Chaosphere. Its kinda hard to review this album comparitively. I think they totaly rock the mid tempo groove thing better than any other metal band. Very surprizing and it works so flawlessly. I can see why people think its boring but, its so unique and creative, NOTHING sounds like Nothing. They really are the heaviest band on earth. A VERY important metal album. suffer.

Messuggha Is brilliant "sounds like Swedish slip knot"? What a ignorant statement. Like it or not this band is one of the best bands ever. If you don't like it stick to your safe supervised radio.

What a horrid band. Nothing about their music is the least bit pleasing to my ears. How can people sit and listen to a blur of noise?

And don't call me "ignorant" because i've heard quite a few of their songs and never enjoyed one bit of any of them.

Different strokes for different folks. Fucking idiot.

The idea behind Meshuggah's music OBVIOUSLY goes straight over your head, or you wouldn't be calling them horrid...instead you'd be saying "I don't like this stuff", which would be just fine...Go read up on time signatures and meters and shit, then come back and tell us how "horrid" this band is.
