Tupac and Biggie were the apex of mainstream rap imo. Yes, the underground has great MCs, but nothing tops early to mid 90s mainstream rap. The shit today is AWFUL. on the rare occasion when I wear a backwards hat and listen to rap in my Honda Civic, it's strictly older stuff
As far as being artistically sound and not just looking to hit it big, I would have to agree with that.
I'm not saying Tupac wasn't talented. He hit it big because he wrote rhymes that hit home for a lot of people in his more serious songs, as well as write catchy, "booty shaking" songs for his less serious faire. In that aspect, he was very versatile.
The exact same thing can be said for Biggie, but IMO Biggie was a way more talented MC. I wasn't huge on Biggie either, to be honest, but if I'm comparing the two, I'm picking Biggie every time.
That said, I favor a lot of their contemporaries: Dre, Snoop, Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Busta Rhymes, The Fugees, etc. I think the reason Tupac and Biggie rose over everyone else while they were alive was that they had some serious songs that people related to come out, and that's not something most of their contemporaries did. Then, they both had tragic deaths, and as we all know, once you die, you become a god a lot of people's eyes no matter what you did when you were alive.
All that said, wake me up when they reanimate ODB or J Dilla. Then I'll be interested.
