returntothepit >> discuss >> Eric Hoffman on Glen Benton: "I never saw him once worship the devil. He was married in a church. It is all a show" by JayTUS on Jan 15,2005 8:17pm

Ex-DEICIDE guitarist Eric Hoffman has hit back at DECIDE frontman Glen Benton, calling Glen's anti-Christian public stance "a show" and accusing his former bandmate of "lying to the public to save his ass" about recent tour cancellations.

In a lengthy statement sent to BLABBERMOUTH.NET, Hoffman said, "I, Eric Hoffman, hired Glen Benton from a local music magazine. His name was 'Rock.' He was a terrible singer at the time, so we hired a friend of ours from DEGRADATION to sing. He was very good, but could not phrase the song properly. Then Glen tried to show him how the lyric phrasing should be since he wrote the lyrics and he did it in a growl. I said, 'That sounds like the devil, so act like you're the devil for a gimmick.' We then let the other singer go.

"As far as Steve [Asheim, drums] writing all the songs, that is a joke. He has written a few, and they were always arranged by me. All songs are arranged by me, and he knows it. Glen listens to variations of the songs and it always goes back to the way I arranged it.

"Recently Glen took publishing money and he lied to the public to save his ass about cancellations, short sets and practice. On the contrary, that is why Brian [Hoffman, guitar] and I left. We now are in legal matters with Glen and Earache [Records]. Earache sends all royalties, merchandise money and publishing to Glen.

"The theme to the video Earache made was Glen's idea. I wanted DEICIDE to have a evil video, not him riding on a motorcycle. They should have made a killer video, jamming in hell in front of Satan while demons mosh.

"I never saw him once worship the devil. He was married in a church. It is all a show.

"He never could do long sets. We have been trying to get him to play more 'Legion' songs for years and many others. Mr. Benton only had to add more than ten songs recently in Europe to save his ass. We always told him to do more songs; even the fans did. We wanted to do the new material to play live, and he did not show up for practice to learn them. Even the record company knows that, right, Al [Dawson, Earache's U.S. label manager]?!

"He did not play all his bass lines in the studio, could not do technical riffs.

"I recorded one of my songs 'The Pentecostal' on his bass. Steve has done almost all his bass lines on all previous albums. I actually had to buy him a bass because he was so unprofessional.

"[He] never showed up for practice, for six months at a time. A few years ago, he tried to take a bunch of gig money. Then he said to my face he did not give a shit about the band, the fans or me. So I kicked his ass.

"I have never seen a check or a real statement for merchandise. There are a lot of DEICIDE shirts around; another lawsuit in the works for Blue Grape [merchandising company] soon.

"He was fired numerous times for not showing up, even Steve told him to get lost and he always came back. He writes the lyrics while we are in the studio.

"And there are other topics.

"No one said anything about his simulating sex sounds of him getting it in the rear on 'Torment In Hell'. That is why I did not do solos on that record.

"Steve's drumming, I had to make him hit the snare with two sticks because he could not blast fast enough for the new songs. Notice on all 'Scars of the Crucifix' songs super-blast beats, two sticks are hit in a roll manner and a simulated ride is added.

"Note: my brother is building some awesome guitars, and we will have a new band in the near future.

"Next will be a video of Mr. Benton's studio work. Check out his posture laying on end of couch. Every sound engineer said he was the worst bass player they ever heard. Scott Burns and Neil [Kernon] can tell that one someday."

toggletoggle post by Kalopsia   at Jan 16,2005 2:07am
some of that shit that eric said there is true. like for instance Steve Asheim's drumming on the new album. in one example, in the song "Scars of the Crucifix" there is a part where it sounds like Steve is doing a one handed snare drum roll. well when i saw them live a few months back, that was not the case. he did a two handed roll and because of that, no cymbals were hit. so the simulated ride is true.

i believe eric about the new video they made. it's absolute garbage because it's filled with footage of glen riding his bike and other bikers just riding around. the footage of the band playing is awesome, but half of it is the biker shit, making the video crap.

this was what benton said a few months back:
"DEICIDE's BENTON Says HOFFMAN Brothers Are Not Returning To Band - Nov. 27, 2004
DEICIDE frontman Glen Benton spoke to Denmark's Antenna webzine on Thursday (Nov. 25) about the departure of the Hoffman brothers and the group's new lineup, among other topics. Several excerts from the interview follow:

Antenna: There have been some speculations on why the Hoffman brothers are missing. Could you explain why they are not here?

Glen Benton: "Explain why they are not here? Eric and Brian have been doing nothing but cancelling shows on us and walking of tours and we can't continue to do that anymore. And they have issues, personal issues that I and Steve [Asheim, drums] can't deal with anymore so I would say it's for the best".

Antenna: Do they rejoin the band when you return home?

Glen Benton: "No".

Antenna: Is it permanent?

Glen Benton: "Yeah".

Antenna: I'm aware of your collaboration with Dave Suzuki (VITAL REMAINS) but how did you hook up with Jack Owen (ex-CANNIBAL CORPSE)?

Glen Benton: "Jack, he stepped up to the plate. Nobody else would. It's hard to find people who can learn these songs as quick as these two did and they learned them quickly like within 24-48 hours so they are still learning songs. I mean with the Hoffmans a set was like 35 minutes and it's like we got the set up to an hour and a half already so we're doing songs… it like we got tired of the bullshit if you know what I mean, not wanting to do the long sets, not playing their leads, not showing up, bullshitting us, lying to us, telling us to come to the airport and not showing up and other bullshit so we are tired of it. I mean more news will come out. We're going to do another record the replacements have already been picked for that so hey man lets just keep going. I think it's better now because on-stage I'm a lot more… I'm able to do what I'm got to do without having that fucking problem which I say the Hoffmans are 'because they are a problem. We don't have that anymore and these two tear those guys apart and it's great. Dave shreds Eric's leads and Jack shreds Brian's leads and it's just great, it's even better so it's only going to get better. It's always been the problem having those two and their problem creating a problem so now that you have that out of the equation it's only positive good things that going to come about. They would rather sit at home and be broke and miserable than come out here and entertain the fans and they talk a big fucking game about this, that and the other. The bottom-line is whose here and whose not. They had every opportunity to do this tour and they didn't want to do it. They would rather stay home with their old ladies."

Antenna: They have basically been the problem all the time or what?

Glen Benton: "Every tour we have ever cancelled, the Hoffmans. Every show we had to cancel, the Hoffmans. So how long can we keep letting that go on to a point where they destroy me and Steve's career too? So we're not let that going to happen anymore. So we take the bull by the horn and get rid of the problem and we'll make things better."

Antenna: I read about your show in Oslo, Norway a few days ago on a message board and people seemed to agree that the band played tight and brutal.

Glen Benton: "[Dave applauds in the background while Glen laughs] Yeah man, it's only going to be better, okay? Eventually my plans are for the next DEICIDE record are to have Dave and Tony [Lazaro] from VITAL REMAINS playing guitar on the album. Tony will be coming in on it too. Jack's got his own band that he does so we're going to go and just pretty much combine DEICIDE and VITAL REMAINS. So that's basically our plan. Tony Lazaro, Dave Suzuki, Steve and myself. Look out we're fucking going to destroy people. It's only going to be better and I can't wait to shove it down a lot of people's throats. It's going to be good."

Read Glen Benton's entire interview with Antenna at this location. A live review and several photos of the band's appearance in Aarhus, Denmark on November 25 have been posted online at this location."

didn't this guy use to have personal bodyguards back in 1992 or something because he was receiving death threats from different fanatic religious organizations? i think he even carried a handgun while he performed on stage and had like a whole security detail "watch" the crowd. Something i read a long time ago. Granted I do enjoy his vocal performance with Vital but man the guy is a fool.

i heard a rumor about a club in Sweden getting bombed because they were going to play there. anybody know any more about that rumor?

toggletoggle post by GoatOfCatalyst at Sep 19,2005 2:53pm
I heard that Quorthon was actually a security guard at the club when that happened! Something to do with Glen's claims of animal abuse/sacrifice.

toggletoggle post by MadMac at Sep 19,2005 3:04pm
Was that the pipebomb rumor? I read stuff online like back in 1997 about their shows being targeted and like attempts on his life. I think this fool made a public annoucment telling anyone that wants to "kill" him to please come to his home in FL and try it. Well someone did throw a pipebomb at his house or something. I think that's when he hired a security team and started to carry illegally. Maybe its not even true.

Good luck brothers...

Glen Benton is one of the worst things to happen to death metal. All he does is make a bad name for himself and his band. No one cares about his stupid ego and his "Satanic" image. Yea, he's about as evil as a pissed off cat on a Monday.

I admit I like his voice but I can't listen to the band. He's an idiot.

for me satanism is silly any way then when you factor in the hypocritical nature of most humans its hard to take anyone's "worshipping" of satan seriously. i think almost all of these people are fake satanist with the exception of a few wackos who actually shoot themselves or kill other people over this stuff...like i said its just all really silly to me

That's just what it seemed like you were getting at by implying that there aren't any real satanists except the people who kill themselves and other people over it.

Satanism is actually a very peaceful religion and much like the Bible and its 10 Commandments they too have rules such as no harm should be done to man or child.

But like Pam said, all religion is stupid. I don't even like Atheism.

I once shoved Bentons drunken fucking ass on to the sidewalk @ the Palladium. He rammed into me mumbling something and fell as I thew him, and I yelled "get the FUCK OFF". I was so angry when this occurred I almost snapped and started felony-fighting his fucking face inside out, in reality knowing there were cops everywhere. I had no clue who he was, I assumed he had just been thrown out (though the side doors) off the floor for being drunk. I put someone else’s expensive equipment down & just stood there looking at him mumble, acting like he just shit his own pants. Turns out he was so far gone we didnt get in to it. Hours Later: We're backstage and then it hit me: he's the singer of Decide, and a total satan master. Turns out, he had just been detained & served warrants entering America for raping a girl some years back, downed a bottle of something & walked out of his bus.
They played some of their shit music, insulted the photographers, and kicked Grail Morillaro of Sliver Magazine in the face while taking his photo. Fuck that band. Doesn’t surprise me the guy is a fucking fake.

In interviews Glen Benton said that it was he and Steve Asheim who wrote the music even back when Eric and Brian Hoffman were in the band. The Hoffman brothers say the opposite. Following their departure, Deicide's music was not the same at all. So I think the Hoffman brothers are telling the truth.
