So, as many of you are fully aware over the years I've grown to be a MASSIVE powermetal nerd. My collection is pretty insane, but I'm always looking for more stuff. Over the last few weeks, these are some bands I've recently been checking out. As usual, note that none of these bands are American. American powermetal is just a sad, sad scene right now.

I could write a little description and comment for each, but instead I'm laying out the links and videos nicely for you. Don't be a lazy prick, just listen to the stuff and make your own opinions. Also, check it all out, as there's huge differences in these bands.

Magician:

bennyhillifier

Galneryus (japanese powermetal)

bennyhillifier

Hibria

bennyhillifier

Thunderstone (finnish)

bennyhillifier

Divine Fire (CHRISTIAN powermetal with horrifyingly cheesy lyrics, but I cannot stop listening to it. The album is actually quite good, but for god's sake don't watch the videos. It's that bad.)

bennyhillifier

Kamelot:

bennyhillifier

Genius:

bennyhillifier

That's enough for now. Lemme know what you think, and post more if you got em. Chances are, though, I already have it.

Hibria rules. "Defying the Rules" is such a badass album. Battleroar and Holy Martyr are excellent epic power metal. Manticora is one of my favorites at the moment. Their "8 Deadly Sins" album kills.

I didn't know there was a new Battleroar album. I checked out Age of Chaos at one point, but I couldn't really get into the singer.

Manticora kills. I don't have 8 deadly sins, but both black circus albums rock.

Battleroar's "To Death and Beyond..." is certainly a step up from "Age of Chaos." Definitely get "8 Deadly Sins." "Hyperion" is also another good album from Manticora.

Hopefully you listen to Helstar and Jag Panzer. Iron Savior should also be mentioned.

I forgot Stormwarrior, who is probably one of the best power metal bands around.

Whoa, that's one I hadn't heard before. Ironically, it's also the first good U.S. powermetal band I've heard in a billion years. I'll be picking this one up. The singer reminds me of "By Inheritance" era Artillery. Guitars have that Annihilator squeal to them too. I love it.

Yeah, the new Divine Fire is going to be my new closet obsession. After watching their homemade videos on youtube I am fully aware that this band is fucking gayer than the gayest of gays, but I CANNOT stop LISTENING to it.

And Galneryus cracks me up. The albums I have are both sick. The singer is tryinf so hard for that italian powermetal sound, it's weird hearing a Jap that can actually sing! However, it's too obvious the fucker doesn't speak a word of english. The guitarist in that band is a certifiable badass.

P.S. Kamelot is a US power metal band... ;)

Divinefire is simply amazing. One of my favorite bands ever.

Do you appreciate Dark Moor?

toggletoggle post by thegreatspaldino   at May 15,2008 7:08pm
i've been listening to Dark Moor for years. great great great band that doesnt really sound much like anyone else. "Tarot" is a great album. "Beyond the Sea" absolutely floored me when i first heard it. "Hall..." and the self titled ruled as well. they sort of have a Sonata Arctica vibe but didnt turn into shit like they did.

Hands down best power metal band is Rebellion, check them out, they sing about vikings and such...and in a not so cheesy way.

here's a lyric of their's

"he ask me to kiss feet
I lift him to my face
'I never bow my head
Nor any of my race!'"

Probably the worst thing that's been posted in this thread. And that's including the christian powermetal!

But seriously, in a less harsh way I'd have to say they sound too much like what they are - some older guys rehashing 'back in the day'. The grooves are too simple and the grooves (and some vox) reek of manowar.

That is another requisite I must mention if you recommend me something: I fucking HATE manowar. Except the kings of Metal CD, which has that awesome "Grandfather! Tell me a story!" thing.

toggletoggle post by thegreatspaldino   at May 15,2008 11:16pm
do you hate Hammerfall? they are almost as cheesy as Manowar.

The only rebellion I know of is the band from Portugal:

They kinda stink.

Hammerfall is Meh... I don't turn it off if it comes on, but it's nothing great to me.

Spaldino, you ever listen to The Gathering?

I do enjoy ManOwar.

Alot of Powermetal I hear is not so great. But when it's good, it's really good.

"Souvenirs" Gathering? they played with November's Doom and Agalloch a while ago right? they kick ass.

What about Twisted Tower Dire? "Crest of the Martyrs" is one fucking awesome album!

Omen, Helstar, and Jag Panzer too!!!!!

toggletoggle post by ArrowHeadNLI at May 15,2008 11:56pm
Yeah. Souvenirs was their last album. They put out a lot of really good shit. Check out If Then Else and Nighttime Birds. those are my current favorites. Mandylion, Always, and How To Measure a Planet are also good, though.

toggletoggle post by thegreatspaldino   at May 15,2008 11:56pm
ok... Burning in Hell is a pretty damn good band. check em out if you have the chance.

http://www.myspace.com/burninginhellmetal

yeah... they kind of rule.

I actually helped a friend special order that album, but I still have yet to hear them.

Check out their myspace but their best tracks are on the album. "At Night" is so awesome.

toggletoggle post by mortalis  at May 15,2008 11:59pm
how about slough feg and hammers of misfortune? anything with mike scalzi is pretty much an automatic win.
