A YaLL literate muthafuckAz recommend A booK n $h!t

I'm in the middle of reading "DMR" By Daniel Trask.

Recently I've read:
"Lanark" Alastair Gray (totally epic all over the place novel chock full of post-modern ideas, and quasi-science fiction overtones.)

"Lie Down in Darkness" William Styron (Classic book by maybe one of the greatest writers ever IMO)

"Women" Charles Bukowski (Semi-Autobiographical piece where an aging Hank Chinaski bangs a billion slutty women. If you don't read Bukowski then I don't know you.)

And since it's a book thread, I might as well say, Michael, it's RECOMMEND.

Last year I read “The Road” after I talked with some friend’s about how awesome the movie The Road Warrior was. It’s a post apocalyptic story about a man and his son traveling across America, trying to survive and stay sane. It took me a while to get used to the writing style, but it’s worth it. Very descriptive and well done, overall.

I’ve been wanting to read “Oil!” by Upton Sinclaire, which is what the movie There Will Be Blood was based on. He also wrote “The Jungle”, which is one of my favorite books.

haha, I was WAITING for someone to say that!

Oh! And "Geek Love" by Katherine Dunn is amazing. It's about a family of sideshow freaks. That's all I'm saying about that, giving away anything else would take away from the story. I love her writing style.

“Apocalypse Culture” by Adam Parfrey has been mentioned in other book threads, but I can’t stress enough how awesomely messed up it is. Looking around for the second one, but I might just get it online.

I've gotta read me some Bukowski

I've been reading The Corner by David Simon and Ed Burns for awhile now. Fans of the The Wire should read it as the journalism that went on for that book is the source of about 90% of the anecdotes on that show.

I love Bukowski, but I can never get through any of his novels because they get too depressing.

My reading tastes are pretty much for pleasure, lately - I already know enough facts.

Fritz Leiber - Swords against Death

Second book in the Lankhmar series, but you can read these in pretty much any order. Very early, very influential sword & sorcery stuff - this shit influenced D&D more than Tolkien, without a doubt. It's mostly loosely-connected short stories following the careers of Fafhrd (a northern barbarian) and The Gray Mouser (an amoral thief) in the city of Lankhmar. Very much in the pulp style. Leiber's stuff is pretty dark and wordy (think Lovecraft, just not so much), but there's tons of sex, violence, and intrigue, and a black sense of humor throughout the whole thing. A+, pick it up if you see a copy. (All the series are "Swords of/and (something)", so if you see that you can't go wrong.)

He gets fired from his job, gets drunk, and bangs a girl with a fat ass, and then gets another job.

What's depressing about that?

Call me crazy, but I can't stand Kerouac, and I can't stand Burroughs. I'm pretty sure there was a Kerouac thread on here a few years ago. I still haven't finished reading On the Road. Listening to Kerouac tell people about his life is like listening to a five year old (a beatnick 5 year old) recall the plot of 101 Dalmations to his parents.

I liked Kerouac while I was reading his stuff...but when I reflect on it, I see the lameness and don't think I'd enjoy reading it again.

If you haven't read that work yet, it's really interesting and also gives good commentary on antiquities trade.

And definitely read the Secret History of the World by Mark Booth.

Howard's End bored the shit out of me. Ishmael is sweet if you've never read/been exposed to anything it deals with. I liked the Story of B more as a novel, but it is mostly the same idea.
