New site? Maybe some day.

I just can't take them seriously. 9 out of 10 times, it's just an excuse to showcase how good looking a singer is but most of the time it's just to showcase how "wild and crazy" a band is. The worst is when a band just stands there all stoic, with something serious to prove. Bottom line is nearly every band is ugly as shit and I don't want to look at them unless they're headbanging. It's unfortunate when egos and image dictate how a band is presented.
Black and White shots of a band playing live is totally cool. In fact it's rather intriguing! Come to think of it, I suppose Type O Negative's lineup pic for Slow Deep and Hard is genius and one of the greatest ever.
Otherwise, you're probably trying waaay to hard. |
Arms folded frowny face or gtfo. wait till you get a load of our stupid weirdo pics taken recently haha. |
SOUNDS LIKE A TICKET TO THE BIG TIME!
Trust me, it would be waaaay cooler if it was just a buncha mysterious sexy headbanging shots. |
BEST PROMO SHOTS IN THE FUCKING UNIVERSE COME FROM THE REVEREND. AND THEY'RE FUCKING FREE!

Wow, I never knew there were so many hidden agendas behind band photos. |
Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't the poses done by bands in most promo photos are decided on by either a PR guy or the photographer and not by the bands themselves? |

I remember when OR finished our first couple songs with our original lineup, two of the original members were flipping out about doing promo pictures. Not my thing. Like someone said above, the rev and hillarie do a great job, why am I gonna pay someone when they do awesome for free. |
Bahhhhh. Surprised that hasn't been done yet. Good on ya. |

its pretty important when you get around to actually needing a press kit to submit to labels, touring management, anything you want to propose a business relationship with. it shows professionalism regardless of what antics are involved in the photo itself (serious frownie arms crossed or hilarious antics alike).
its not very often that you get quality shots of the entire band in 1 live photo. at least not in our experience.
Hillarie just did some work for us on a photo shoot since we are putting together press kits, shit came out great. cant wait to post it up when they are finished. |

Your point is well taken but like I said, not my thing. Music is just a hobby for me at this point anyhow. |

Only blurred, indistinguishable live shots are real.

yea i definitely hear that. especially when finishing up an EP, promo shots are not needed at all especially when they cost money. its nothing to stress over really till you start needing support from a larger business entity. wrapping up our full length and want to start shopping it around so a press kit is essential. plus that shit was fun as hell walking around the woods finding choice spots for photos |
I love the Rev and Hillarie's photos. That is how I found this site just by searching around at people's band photos. I was in the mode where I was going to get better at portait work..but I gave up on that idea lol

These are my specialty! |

I'm hesitant to trust or work with anyone who thinks that image is more important than the art. Everyone can be poon hurt if you want. Bottom line is the majority of promo shots are fucking stupid, boring, overrated and egotistical. That's fine if you wanna be like that. I might be looking into it way too much but in the end I prefer not be that indulgent in self worship. |

i completely agree. i see far too many bands online that i've never even heard of. yet their website is decked out with artwork and all these pretentious promo shots of them with arms folded. promo shots dont matter if you arent working hard on the music, getting it out there.
no one gives a shit what you look like as long as the music is good.
for those that care more about the image, signing artists that meet specific guidelines, are all in the wrong field of work trying to milk money out of an industry that is founded on art and creativity. |

fixed |

i feel like the actual music isnt even important to some people anymore, MTV fuck faces worried about whether or not you're in shape and marketable as a sex symbol or whatever.

Yes! good fix haha. the real artists arent in it for the money they are there to play music, enjoy what they do, and if their lucky make a living enough to sustain themselves without a day job. something i hope one day might be possible, even if it means sacrificing everything in the process. fuck i want to go back on the road... |
always thought this one was cool. |
CHEERS ALEX! You get mah drift! I definitely LOVE hating all over bands with fancy glossy myspaces etc and the whole promo shot thing ties into that perfectly.
DESTROY THEIR MODERN METAL AND BANG YOUR FUCKING HEAD! |

the Blessed Offal shot is solid. Distant, vague, straight to the point. Where was it taken? |
Josh, keep this going and I'll be holding a giant lollipop in our promo pic. |
dude, venues/promoters ask for promo shots, what would you suggest bands do? Just to say no? |
Tell them to search for the band on RTTP. |

really? i've played a few hundred shows all over and have never been asked for a promo shot. fuck any club or promoter who needs to approve a band's dress code before a show. |
